<div>New regulations aimed at restraining the excesses of payday loan lenders are now in effect. In the absence of these laws the number of loan shops have sky-rocketed. Reports show that the bill to cap high-interest rates of payday loans failed due to the strong lobbying effort by the payday loan indudtry. People are anxiously waiting for the bureau to take necessary action towards the loan shops and they hope the feds would be taking a more aggressive aproach than the state did. It would be worthwhile to watch the developments in this issue. The author isn&#8217;t satisfied with the recent activities in this matter.</div>
<div></div>
<blockquote>
<div>&#8220;We can hopefully expect more action in 2013, assuming it doesn’t get squeezed off the calendar by bigger issues like the budget, school finance, and re-redistricting. I don’t expect very much from the laws we actually got, but I am prepared to be pleasantly surprised&#8221;.</div>

<div>Obama&#8217;s recess appointment of Richard Cordray as the director of Consumer Financial Protection Bureau have raised the hopes of the public. They hope to be sheltered from the exploitation of the payday lenders. The Consumer Protection Act had only partial powers, but with a director rights to closely supervise loan shops are changes to the current laws are possible. Even though many senators blocked the director&#8217;s nomination, the President didn&#8217;t back down from his decision. The failure of bank regulators to stop predatory lending resulted in the mortage meltdown in 2008. The bureau is accountable to Congress and Americans and is designed to protect the cosumers.</div>
<div></div>

<div>&#8220;Any disagreements over the power of the bureau should be resolved through separate legislation, not by preventing it from doing its job&#8221;.</div>
